History

Built by the Sedley Family, Morley Old Hall dates from the 16th Century. John Sedley, the original owner, was an architect to Henry VII, and he would be delighted to find that little has changed since the day he designed the property. The wonderful period features remain and have been beautifully preserved.

In more recent years the house has been owned by other wealthy individuals, including Field Marshal Sir Edmund Ironside, who was Commander in Chief of Home Forces during the Second World War. In the Seventies, it was owned by Janet Shand Kydd, the first wife of Peter Shand Kydd, who was the stepfather of Diana, Princess of Wales. If you go into Attleborough, two miles away, you'll find lots of locals who remember Diana visiting here as a little girl, from her family home in nearby Sandringham, to ride her pony.

Within the building itself the main staircase leading to the upper floors is intriguingly found behind a large curtain in the dining hall. Made of solid oak, it has stood for nearly 500 years yet it doesn't make the slightest creak.

Surrounded by unspoilt beautiful countryside and included in the books "Beautiful Homes of Britain", Pevsners "Buildings of England" and Burke's "Guide to Country Houses", Morley Old Hall is truly a unique and fascinating building.
